The giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus), also known as the golden-capped fruit bat, is a rare megabat and one of the largest bats in the world. The species is endangered and is currently facing the possibility of extinction because of poaching and forest destruction. It is endemic to forests in the Philippines.
My Philosophy
If I have not noticed anything about humanity, I know that everyone needs something to live for or words to live by. I am no different. I came across this phrase my junior year in high school on a 3-day retreat, and I have been doing my absolute best to live up to it ever since. Before going on the Encounter Retreat my life was very unhappy and unfulfilling. I was constantly in trouble, arguing with my mother on a daily basis, and rebelling in school. I was curious about this retreat because everyone who had gone said, “If you want to know, you have to go.” I did not just WANT to know, I felt that I NEEDED to go. I needed to feel a part of something bigger than myself. So, I embarked on a journey that would change my life for the better.
The saying, “Live the 4th,” has grown on me like spots on a Dalmatian. This quote means to keep the loving spirit that I acquired on the retreat with me every day, and spread that loving spirit with others. The feelings were quick to flee, but did not stay away for long. Before long, my life was back on track. I started obeying the rules in school, improving my reaction towards other people, repairing the coarse relationship with my mother, and most importantly began strengthening my relationship with God. I admit that since graduating from high school it’s been a bit harder to keep my loving attitude going, but I do the best I can.
I take pride in my philosophy, and live by my sworn oath to “Live the 4th.” Although it is not always an easy task, I do my best to spread God’s love with everyone and everything I encounter on this earth, especially through my service to the poor. I proudly wear the cross that was given to me on the retreat everyday as an additional reminder of the lessons I learned. It says, “I have called you by name you are mine,” Isaiah 43:1. I promise to continue living out my philosophy, and helping others to do the same in whatever situations I may encounter for the duration of my life.

Last night my wife & I were having a conversation about things we don’t like about ourselves. As she was telling me her thoughts I couldn’t help but be baffled at her words. On the outside, she oozes confidence, but on the inside she fights a constant battle. She had told me these things once before, but I didn’t know she still felt this way. I was having a hard time accepting that I was understanding her self consciousness. So, she asked me if I liked everything about myself. I said, “no, of course not. But I have learned to accept the things that I can’t change as part of who I am, and the things I can change do something about.” I hope she can do this one day too because I love her and she’s beautiful in every way to me.

Male cashier with multiple tattoos (two of them are colored in with rainbow): How are you this evening?
Me: Pretty good. Starving, obviously. How are you?
Cashier: Not bad. I can't wait to get off my shift and get home to my boyfriend.
Woman behind me: Wait, you're gay?
Cashier: Yeah. . . ?
Woman: That's a shame.
Me: Why?
Woman: He seemed like such a wonderful man, it's a shame he's gay.
Cashier: Why is it a shame?
Woman: It's wrong! It's immoral, it's dis-
Me: Excuse me, but what's it to you if he's gay?
Woman: It's offensive!
Me: But how does it affect you?
Woman: What?
Me: Where exactly does it start to make sense that it affects you? A relationship is between 2 people, not 3.
Woman: *sputters a bit, then leaves without her food*
Cashier: . . . Wow, thank you.
Me: Ignorant people are the reason I claim to be allergic to the human race.
